The Locals' Calendar: Huntington Beach From the US Open Wind-Down to the Airshow

The last Sunday of the Lexus US Open of Surfing is the strangest day of the year on Pacific Coast Highway. The bleachers south of the pier are still full, the sponsor village is still humming, and by Monday morning almost all of it is gone. What stays is the version of Huntington Beach that residents actually live in for the next two months.

That stretch between August 3 and the Pacific Airshow the first weekend of October is the most underrated block on the local calendar. The weather holds, the beach parking loosens, and the events keep coming in a rhythm that feels tuned for people who own keys here rather than wristbands.

The Monday after the crowd leaves

The Lexus US Open runs through August 2, 2026, on the beach south of the pier, with pro surfing, live music, food, games, and athlete appearances all free to walk up to. It is the loudest week of the HB summer and the one that draws in everyone from Long Beach to San Clemente. What most casual visitors do not realize is that the local programming barely pauses when it ends.

Old World Village turns the page almost immediately. Bier Fest runs August 8, 9, 15, and 16, with German food, imported beer, live music, and family entertainment, admission free and open to all ages. Pier Plaza does its own quieter version the following weekend, when Surfin' Sundays returns on August 22 and 23 with the Surf City Marketplace, artist and vendor booths, and live instrumental surf music.

A calendar you can actually plan around

The dates below are the anchor points. Everything else in downtown, from Friday Farmers Market at the pier to Saturday car shows on Main Street, fills in around them.

Read across that table and the pattern is obvious. There is no dead weekend between the US Open and the Airshow. There is also no weekend where downtown gets overwhelmed the way it does the final Saturday of July.

What Old World is really doing this fall

Old World Village has been quietly running the longest festival stretch in Orange County for years, and 2026 is no different. Bier Fest bridges August, and Oktoberfest picks up September 6 and runs all the way through November 8.

Nine straight weekends of German food, craft beer, and live entertainment at Old World, starting the first Saturday after Labor Day.

If you have lived here more than a year, you already know the calculus. The first two Oktoberfest weekends are the ones with the least strain on parking, and the last two get a second wind once the school routine settles. The middle stretch is when the out-of-town buses start showing up, and it is also when the Pacific Airshow parks itself directly on the coastline October 2 through 4. The Main Street breakfast shuffle

Two arrivals reshaped the downtown food map in 2026, and both landed in a way that quietly favors residents over tourists.

Champagnes Kitchen opened its second location at 200 Main Street in the former IHOP space at Steve Daniel Plaza, with owners Matt and Winnona Tobey targeting a soft launch the first week of May 2026. The Tobeys took over the original Champagnes in Newport Beach during 2020, and the concept they brought north is a counter-service breakfast and lunch, full-service dinner, full espresso bar, and a six-seat liquor bar. The Newport original has been running as a family deli and bistro since 1989, so this is not a debut so much as a coastal expansion into the block that used to belong to a chain.

Habit Burger & Grill opened at 8965 Atlanta Ave. on May 4, 2026, on the south side of town closer to the wetlands than to the pier. The Free Charburger giveaway on May 2 tipped off the model, which is a neighborhood drive-and-park spot rather than a downtown draw. Between Champagnes taking the old IHOP corner and Habit filling in Atlanta, the two most recent additions to the HB food map are both aimed at people who eat here on a Tuesday, not people who eat here once a year.

The pier restaurant that still isn't

The other food story of 2026 is the one that has not happened yet. The old Lets Go Fishing stand at the base of the pier has been dark for years while the city works through a lease with former Mayor Keith Bohr. The Voice of OC reported in February 2026 that the council approved a $1.3 million bond meant to protect the city if the project stalls, and Councilmember Don Kennedy Twining said at the January 20 meeting that he wanted Bohr open "by the end of summer" 2026.

The original opening target was May 2022. The delays have been attributed to coordination across three state agencies, the OC Health Department, and multiple city departments. Whether the doors open in September or slip again into 2027, the pier itself, the fifth longest in California, keeps its Friday morning farmers market and its weekend fishing crowd. The absence of the restaurant is the story, and it is one that only shows up if you walk out to the end of the pier often enough to notice.

The quieter weekday map

Between the marquee weekends, the parts of Huntington Beach that get almost no press are the ones residents lean on. A few worth putting back on the mental map for August and September:

• HB Pier Farmers Market, every Friday morning, the easiest way to fold the pier into a normal week
• Shipley Nature Center at Central Park, 18 acres of restored coastal habitat that never feels crowded on a weekday
• Bolsa Chica State Beach and the ecological reserve across PCH, best walked on a Tuesday morning before the parking lot fills
• Meadowlark Golf Club, the public course tucked into the north end that most beachfront visitors never learn about
• Huntington Beach Art Center, running six exhibitions a year since it opened downtown in 1995
• Old World Village on a non-festival weekday, the cobblestone lanes empty enough to actually see the architecture

Weekly rhythm around here is not a mystery once you find it. Fridays belong to the pier and to Surf City Nights on Main Street. Saturdays get the car shows. Sundays through Wednesdays are for the trails, the wetlands, and the courses.

Why this stretch matters if you are rooted here

The reason so many residents quietly call August through early October their favorite window is that the city is running at full brightness with a fraction of the July crush. The events are steady, the new restaurants have had a chance to settle their kitchens, and the light off the ocean hits at that lower angle that photographers ambush every year.
